Aggressive Dog Behaviour
We have 2 females and 1 male. The 2 year old female is randomly aggressive to our dogs and always aggressive towards new dogs. They all stay in their separate dog boxes during the day and she tries to attack the 7 year old female next to her. We have tried "making" her socialize with other dogs but it hasn't changed anything. Telling her off when she does it doesn't make a difference. How can we stop her behaving this way. After speaking to others on the web, I found the answer. You can't "make" a dog socialize, you "train" it to accept things. Keeping your dogs in "boxes" during the day is making your dogs aggression worse, and the longer you continue to do this the harder it will be to eliminate the aggressive behavior. You need some serious training help and you can't get it here. Yelling at her will escalate the aggression (to a dog yelling is the same as barking and considered a threat). You need to get that 2 year old female away from your other dogs before something serious happens. Re-homing may be necessary and she may be just fine in another home without another dog or children. When aggression is allowed to continue, it only gets worse and harder to control, so please remove that dog from your other dogs and then check around to find a behavior trainer to help you. In the meantime, please read this article. It might help until you can get one on one help;

Supposedly, in one session, the trainer is able to address & eliminate unwanted habits such as excessive barking, accidents in the house, jumping on people, etc. They say they will follow up any time your dog, or you, have a relapse and offer a lifetime guarantee. I have 3 Toy Fox Terriers and the trainer wanted almost a month's mortgage payable (nonrefundable) at the first session. For this much, I would hope the minimum would be a lifetime guarantee although I feel more comfortable if the cost of the program was prorated as the dog progresses or not. I have not found one person, other than the Bark Busters trainer, who has used this program. There are few ads and they claim not to use the clicker method. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated. Well, I have your answer right here. I would not pay anyone to train my dogs, unless you have a very serious problem (like aggression or something) that you have tried many ways to solve and really need help. My advice is go get a dog training book and try to work on these things yourself. It'll take patience but if you use the right techniques you will be successful, even if it takes a while.

Dog Behavior
On this site and many others I see average laypeople trying to give advice on how to address aggression, fear and shyness and other behavior problems. What worked on your dog or what you saw on tv is relevant to that specific situation and does not apply to every dog or every situation. Behavior problems should be evaluated and addressed on an individual basis by a professional. The wrong advice will make problems worse or create a problem that was not previously there. Dog owners should first contact their local SPCA or shelter for recommendations on local trainers and behavior consultants (some shelters have in-house consultants who offer behavior services – some of the top behavior specialists in the country work for shelters). While changing behavior does involve working with the dog, a HUGE part of the process is working with the owner, to help them improve their technique and timing. None of this can be accomplished through advice over the internet. Essentially — I agree with you. And, for the most part I do see that the better answers tell the person to take the dog to the vet or to enroll in obedience classes or search for a dog behaviorist. On the other hand, the average American dog owner will not even spend the money to put their dog through a beginner dog training class. They don't spend the time to socialize the dog. Then when the dog has behavior problems the solution most the time is dumping it in a shelter or giving it away. So, if some free advise on the Internet can get these folks to maybe try something suggested and maybe see some improvement and then maybe they will enroll the dog in a class or phone the SPCA and ask about a consultation with a behaviorist. I'd often see people have to pass a test before being allowed to own a dog sort of like passing a test before being allowed to drive. Not ever go to happen, but it sure would cut down on the dogs in shelters.
