Dogs Behavior Problems
I want to know how you are supposed to correct bad behavior of a puppy. I know lots of people just shout BAD DOG. But that's not very effective. What's a good way to correct bad behavior like an accident in the house, play biting, chewing furniture, etc. ? Thanks for the help. I was so glad to find this — A stern "No." is usually enough to get them to stop momentarily, then show them what you want them to do. For example, if you find the dog peeing in the house, a stern "no." and then immediately take the dog outside to finish. Then treat & praise when the dog finishes outside. If you find them chewing furniture or play biting, "no." and then introduce a toy they can chew on. Sometimes with playing they get overexcited and it's best to just walk away and let them chill out for a couple of minutes, but first try to re-direct their teeth to a toy.

Dog Leash Aggression
I just brought a new dog home – he is about 5 years old and neutered. For the past 3 months he has lived in a rescuer's home with many dogs coming in and out and he has been fine with all of them (submissive rather. ) Since I've had him, when I walk him on leash he becomes agitated and aggressive when he sees other dogs. Classic leash-aggression. Any advice. I was so glad to find this — I have the SAME problem and you know what – it's my problem not my dog. Are you tense when you walk him? Do you anticipate the misbehavoir? Do you tighten the leash as you become more tense? You are telling your dog what to do – you are telling him – be on the lookout buddy, somethings up. Trust me – you are doing this – because you have noticed he has leash aggression. And when he does, you most likely pull back on the leash, your heartrate goes up, you may be mortified/embarrassed by this, you may scold him again – heightening what is perceived by him – he senses you are upset and is trying to "protect" you. I found Suzanne CLothier's advice to work very very well. I spend most of the walk singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weaner when we pass by houses that have dogs – it's hard to be tense when you are singing I wish I were an Oscar Meyer weaner to a dog.. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where the info is: It IS controllable but please keep in mind – most of the anxiety is most likely coming from you. You are now in a catch -22 situation – your dog had an experience and you have now perpetuated it. STAY CALM at all times during walks. Sing sing sing or think of something funny when you see other dogs. Take a deep cleansing breath and do not do not do not grip that leash tighter (did you know that is how the police train their dogs to attack, but tensing the leash telling the dog to "get ready". I oftentimes keep the leash cupped in my hand, never really holding it. If I need to- I just squeeze so I won't lose my dog, but that keeps me from gripping it tightly. I also "shake things out" especially when I see another dog walking near. Pay attention to the signals you are setting. Once you realize the tension is coming from you and going right down the wire (leash) to the dog, you will be able to control it more. I can now sense my own tension, the gasp of holding my breathe as mutiple dogs would come walking by, the tension in my shoulders as I anticipate the barking/lunge. But now things are much much better. In fact, I am now working on desensitization – even if we have a barking like mad session I make him sit next to the "suspect" dog and wait until he calms down before moving on. I give NO affection, no petting, just waiting and firm words to sit, stay, and shsss. Good luck – it all starts and ends with you..

Dog Sitting
I am thinking of dog sitting for the summer. I will only care for them for a few hours like when the family goes on a day trip or maybe an amusment park for the day. They will be in an enclosed area outside w/ grass & in the house when it rains. I'll walk & play with them too. How much do you think I should charge. Essentially — I petsit, but the dogs stay at their own house. I will do one visit for 1 hour, or two visits for 30 minutes. I charge $10. 00 a day, but it really depends on how nice of a neighborhood your working in.
